Minnows are very ecologically important across The Land Between. They are a great food source for other fish, birds and various wildlife, and act as the base for the food web. It is important to monitor minnows in aquatic environments as certain species can indicate quality of water. Some minnow species are more tolerant of pollution and lower quality water, while other species require clean and high quality water to survive.
In Marvelous Minnows, you’ll learn about the minnows that live in your lake and the types that indicate how healthy your lake is. Come out for a morning or afternoon of exploring the minnows in your lake!
Please note that a Ontario Fishing License is required for minnow trapping.
This event can take place during a ‘Ontario Family Fishing Day’, which is a province wide opportunity for Canadian residents to fish Ontario waters for free. These dates fall on: Family Day fishing weekend in February (February 19 - 21 2022), Mother’s Day weekend in May (May 7 - 8 2022), Father’s Day weekend (June 18 - 19 2022) and July 2 - 10 2022. During all other time periods, Canadian residents between the ages of 18 and 64 years must purchase a valid fishing license to legally fish in Ontario.
Please treat the minnows with respect and supervise young children to ensure safe handling. Do not leave minnows out of water for an extended period of time. Ensure their bucket of water is in shade and water is changed regularly. Excessive handling of fish can suppress their immune system and compromise health.
